Prevalence of non-substance addictions in future health professionals: the case of gambling and video games

abstract

Introduction: Gambling and video game addiction can negatively affect university students academically, psychologically, and socially. Objective: To assess the prevalence and characteristics of these addictions among Nursing students. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study with 161 students using ESTUDES and EDADES questionnaires. Results: Gambling prevalence was 49.7%, predominantly males (online), while females preferred in-person games. Problematic gambling risk was 5.5%. Video game participation was 42.2%, with higher female prevalence but higher male risk. No negative academic impact was detected. Conclusion: High prevalence and sex differences demand targeted preventive interventions.
