Perceived risk and use of electronic cigarette among university students

abstract

Introduction. The use of e-cigarettes is increasing in several countries of the world, mainly
due to the popularity of these electronic devices. Objetive. Identify the relationship
between risk perception and the use of e-cigarettes. Method. The study sample consisted
of 285 university students and a stratified randomized sample was used. Results. there were
significant differences to the perception of risk used by consumers and non-consumers of
e-cigarettes. Likewise, a relationship was presented between the perception of risk and the
use of electronic cigarettes (p < .05). Discussion and conclusion. The findings may be because
e-cigarette consumers have favorable ideas and expectations about the use of e-cigarettes.
The results of the study represent an opportunity for nurses to address the phenomenon of
e-cigarettes and contribute to the strengthening of knowledge about this current modality of
nicotine consumption.
